I tried to capture the special relationship I have with my sister-in-law (sister of the heart), Kathy. Not only does our relationship inspire me, but so do Kathy's tips about textiles included in mixed media art. It didn't scan very well so I may try to photograph it in daylight. Kathy is the central figure and also the figure with a white second line parasol. Unfortunately, my right eye is seven times worse than it was a couple of years ago. If that wasn't bad enough, It costs more to put lenses in my expensive, beautiful, still stylish frames that it does to buy the store's junky frames with the same lenses. This makes me crazy! I told the technician he should wear a bandit's mask.

Still in shock, I was staggering off to my car when I passed Old Navy. I was startled to see those creepy mannequins that are so bizarre in their TV ads. There is something about them that is frightening, almost as bad as clowns. I wonder if they walk around when the mall is closed and all the lights are off. They even have a scary dog!

Sunday - Knitting

I am convinced that knitting can induce the brain to enter an alpha wave state. I do that several times. It's a terrible habit to get into. The cat tries to get me up and lately Pedro is sanding the outside of the building right on my bedroom wall. It sounds as though I'm having my tooth drilled. But I persist. Today, I took some phone pics of this silly process while even Lola the cat tried her best to rouse me. All of this and I still went back to sleep for another ten minutes. The object on the wall is a cast of Nicole C's abdomen 3 days before she gave birth. The breasts are dressed with silk rose petals.

Saturday - Partial Purse Collection

It is my belief that a woman cannot have too many accessories. Today I'm focused on purses. Some other day we'll look at all the jewelry (mostly costume) and scarves. I don't have a large shoe collection because I lost so many in Katrina, it's hard to enjoy buying them now. Also I now require comfortable shoes which aren't as exciting to acquire. My purses are purchased inexpensively at discount stores, thrift shops and occasionally a vintage store. Some are made by me and others have been made or purchased as gifts for me. I have no good storage solution, so I've started hanging them on the walls where they make there own art statements. Here are a few.

To see the purses clearly, just click on the photo. The first photo has a purse that I made by scanning an M.R.E. (Meals Ready to Eat) for military and distributed here after Katrina. I printed the MRE on special fabric that can be used in a computer printer and made it part of the bag. The inside has pockets made of photo images on cloth of the MRE contents. The second bag was made with lots of detail by my sister, Kathy, and is decorated with fabric yo yos. The third bag is a silk purse I bought for $1.00 at a thrift store. Last but not least is a lovely silk embroidered bag that I received as a gift.

The next column has a blue alligator stamped bag probably from WalMart and a shrimp colored crochet bag from W.M. Behind it is a red leather bag from a thrift store. Next is another amazing bag (notice the detail) made by Kathy. Fleur de Lis fabric and a fancy button help to make it look really snazzy. It has fancy handles and a zipper! The next little bag is a silk thrift store find. And last is a purple "alligator" bag with a chain handle from a jewelry show. (I don't know why some of the colors are not accurate.)

In the third column is a bag I made that features sushi cartoon fabric. The edge that goes around the bag looks like a peeled shrimp. Inside are pockets that are fabric photos of real shushi. The handle is bamboo, of course. Next, a black silk bag with beading found for $1.oo. Next to it a little brown bag, also $1.00. It has lots of compartments. The camera bag is hanging nesxt to it. Behind the camera bag is a small gold, quilted bag for glitzy nights, also a $1.00 find. Below it is a wool purse that I knitted then felted (by shrinking in hot water to create a tight weave). It's lined and trimmed with felted flowers. Last is a tan bag with a pink lower case "L". You remember those bags from a few years back. It's nice and roomy and comfy on the shoulder when it's full.

That's just a part of the collection. I hope it inspires you to make a purse or cruise a thrift shop!

Subscribe

You can subscribe to this blog in various ways. Looking at myself in the mirror, I wonder how I ended up looking this way. An electric toothbrush is a strange artifact when you think about it. I wonder how much trouble it would cause if I just didn't show up for work and didn't call in either. The white disc says surreal. I can't remember where I found it, I think in a jar of "mud" for my hair. I stuck it to the mirror just because.

Day 8 - Friday

The Patio

Portrait of a Creole girl with lovely eyes

Don and I went to dinner at LeCitron on Tchoupitoulas - an odd location near WalMart. It's the oldest building on this side of Canal Street. The owner renovated it himself and included the complete history of the location on the back of the menu. There are several intimate rooms and a very attractive, roomy, but quiet bar. The food and service were very good. Don had a dark, duck gumbo- the best I've ever tasted. Chef hadn't tried to fill it up with other meats like sausage or ham. There's a lovely courtyard, but it was too hot for that. They also have a Sunday brunch that we plan to try. It's a la carte, not one of those icky buffets. The only flaw - no biscuits on the brunch menu.

Day 7 - Thursday

Gave a small plastic trophy to a client who deserved a big reward for getting through a terrible time. I'm using various photos and "souvenirs" to create a hysterectomy artist's book. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to cover the surgery itself. This photo was taken just prior to having a radiograph (X-ray) of the chest. The tech had me sick little metal bull's eyes on each nipple. I'd only had those before for mamograms. Here I am in the tiny "room" in which you disrobe and gown up. I think this photo is an accurate representation of my SELF at the time. I got a copy of the report on the X-Rays and it shows some degeneration of the "frontal" spine. However, after 20 years of not smoking my lungs are clear. So that's two creative things yesterday, the salad bar and the face cloth.

Day 2 _ Saturday

I created a yogini necklace for Mary S., my sis-in-law because she regularly goes to classes. The necklace is silk cord with beads representing the chakra colors at unevenly spaced intervals. Then Mary asked me to fix a pair of her earrings and I agreed. I will begin with a new Day One. My hope is to stay focused on random acts of creativity on a daily basis - the original intention of this blog. Here is my latest attempt started yesterday and finished today June 12. This set is made from salvaged floral ribbon and costume fabric yo yo's along with on hand jewelry supplies. I used yo yo makers that I was gifted by my sistuh (in law), Kathy. This set will be given to her this weekend during her visit to New Orleans. Hopefully, I will learn to focus my camera - it's supposed to be automatic!

Fairy in the Window

It's hard enough getting ready for work without a fairy flitting around in the bedroom. It allows me to spontaneously capture images that excite my eye. Some are done with a digital camera as well. All that photo snapping has stirred up other creative juices, so some drawing and painting are happening too.

OH NO! The food is wonderful and inexpensive. One of their recipes was published in the newspaper - White Beans and Shrimp. (See NOLA.com recipes, Thursday, August 16.) Using the shrimp purchased at the Gretna Farmers' Market, I made my easier, crock-pot version of it. I only used 1/2 pint of heavy cream. Sarah was right; it really had to have some cream.

Please check their website for something positive about NOLA. Be sure to look at the menu. We (DH did actually) looked it up and found this site

www.samueljohnson.com

Boswell tells us that Samuel Johnson made this famous pronouncement that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel on the evening of April 7, 1775. He doesn't provide any context for how the remark arose, so we don't really know for sure what was on Johnson's mind at the time. However, Boswell assures us that Johnson was not indicting patriotism in general, only false patriotism. For more of Samuel Johnson's thoughts on patriotism in general, go to the patriotism page. For a discussion on a possible false patriot who Johnson might have been thinking of, see this discussion.

Day 28 August 18

Back to the Gretna Farmers' Market
It just has a nicer, small town pace, and it's
covered (cooler). I park across the street just
outside a neighborhood barroom. When patrons
open or close the door, there is a wave of that
wonderful/awful barroom smell. It is made from
wet, dark, smoky, air conditioned, yeasty,
beery, man smells. That smell is enticing on a
hot, bright day. I wouldn't go in there, but I like
to catch a whiff.

My first stop is always for a glass of fresh, fruit water. Those are muscadine grapes in the little baskets. I'm allergic to watermelon, so I always have mango, sometimes two glasses. Today I was served by a little girl standing on a chair. She smiled widely when I said, "Gracias."

Next stop was to checkout the seafood at Danny and Bonnie's. I bought some fresh catfish filets for Don and some shrimp for tomorrow. I'm using Cafe' Reconcile's recipe for White beans and shrimp, but I'm leaving out the heavy cream. Sarah says that will ruin it, even though she's never had it. That girl does like her butter and cream.

Mr. Danny was good enough to show me the crabs in his refrigerated truck so I could snap a photo. I wasn't up to dealing with those today. I think they were still alive, just chilly. They were too pretty too cook. If someone else cooked them, I would eat'em up.

Don't look there. Look the other way -orchids - which I'd been trying to ignore. I'm a loose woman when it comes to orchids. I just can't say, "NO." Soooo I bought one that's about to bloom, and took it to the office where I can enjoy it during the day. Mr. Russell has thousands of orchids at his house, just down the street from the market, and I'm invited for a tour. I'd need to prepare by leaving all money, credit cards and checks at home.

Day 26 August 16

Babysitting orchids has rewards

This is a closeup of one blossom on a

spray of orchids.

I'm taking care of this

plant while my client is out of town. I didn't like
it as well as Gretna's Market;
the pace is faster, it's crowded and
it's set up in a blacktop parking lot.
Whew! What a super solar collector it is.
But there was great produce. Gotta love
those peaches.

I was deeply moved by the elderly couple
who are apiarists. They lost 400 hives
in Lakeview (as well as there home)to
Katrina. Now they live in Algiers,
just across the Mississippi River from
the French Quarter. I believe they said
they have 70 hives now. I hated to see
them out in the heat (over 100F.
for hours. Theirhi ves are healthy
though - no sign of the infections
that are killing off so many wild
and domestic bee hives. So I bought some
honey that we do not need at all,
and I'm glad I did.

Those are home made cheese tamales
lying on the aluminum foil. I'm going to switch gears to one of my Katrina inspired sculptures from roots of dead plants. I think it was fooled by the Saints' game on the television (bright rectangle).

We had a surprisingly wonderful time at Asian Cajun on Oak St where we were entertained by with his small piano. He rolled it from table to table playing requests. Then the chef, Honorable Chan, came out and played Moon River. He played really well - maybe better than Phillip. Sorry, Phil. We laughed and sang along. There are some bonuses to being older, and singing in public without giving a damn is one of them.

I had a delicious coconut, curried grouper, and for dessert, yam ice cream - yum! The dessert was waaayyy too much - 3 scoops of ice cream and instead of a little cookie, a basket made of cookie. I did manage to eat it all. Don had his grouper grilled and ordered bread pudding for dessert. He said it was very good.

The service was wonderful. A miracle in post-Katrina NOLA.

My only complaint is that the place is too noisy, and I don't mean the piano and singing. There must be some way to lower the decibel level. ?

Day 19 August 9

Visited an Uptown optometrist today and dropped a bundle. Of course, they lead me to the most expensive frames, and I fell in love with some, touched them, put them on, before I knew what was happening. I could have had a used car instead! Hope my vision will improve with my new Finnish spectacles. I started to drive away, but remembered my 365 Project, and drove around the block to snap a pic. That's the optometrist in the parking lot. He glanced my way - hope he doesn't think I'm really crazy (as compared to regular "therapist crazy"). NO. I don't think so. I spend so much time looking for things that I covered up with other things, or folded up inside of things, or put in the infamous, but unlocatable, "safe place." I have periods of organizing, but I can't seem to keep up with the steady stream of paper washing into my life. But it's Friday at 6:00PM - no one else works this late on Friday - so I am outta here!

Day Four July 26 Orchid Sitting

A very nice compliment! It was waaay more stuff than I was aware of. I was reminded several times of my mother as I came across little things that had belonged to her. There were some tiny, gold-plated glass beads that once adorned her glamorous, rayon dress. A few threads of the fabric were still attached. I felt very close to her and aware of our shared, packrat tendencies. I need a 12-step program for my book addiction. Here's a photo of a tshirt tacked up above a doorway in the crowded little shop. It says, "It's Your Choice...The Hood [as in KKK], The Crook, None of the above." It's from a past election where the gubernatorial runoff included David Duke, with a KKK hood since he was the former Grand Wizard; Edwin Edwards, the crook; none of the above just for fun! People also had bumper stickers - "VOTE FOR THE CROOK - IT'S IMPORTANT"

Also took some shots tonight of Schatzie's bedtime ritual.

July 29 - Sunday

?????????
No photos today!
